Although it is highly recommended in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, many foreign tourists still don't know of the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture, making it the perfect venue for your next discovery.
A once thriving region whose legacy can be seen today in its rich tradition of pilgrimages, architecture, art and cuisine. Sit at a private geisha show, drink the finest sake, and feast on fresh sushi, or climb the holy peak of Mt. Haguro and stay in an isolated temple for the night, all away from the crowds of Japan's more popular destinations.
With our special package including round trip flights from Tokyo, central accommodation, a rental car to get around easily, and special access to Shonai's finest attractions, travelers are welcomed to find their own Japan in this unique region.

DAY1	Fly from Haneda Airport to Shonai Airport We can recommend multiple time options for you; we recommend a morning flight to make the most of your time in Shonai. (Flight takes about one hour) Upon arrival at the airport, pick up your rental car (the rental car area is in between the arrival lobby and check in counter on the first floor of the airport) and drive to your hotel. After checking into your hotel, start enjoying the Shonai region right away by visiting such attractions as the Sankyo Soko storehouses to taste the history of this region that was once such a great port by the Sea of Japan, and the Soma-ro restaraunt to feast on gorgeous cuisine by the sea while viewing an authentic geisha show without the crowds and exorbitant prices of Kyoto. Or if you'd prefer, you can sample a taste of some of Japan's most holy mountains, the three peaks of the Dewa Sanzan, all of which can be easily reached from Sakata City or Tsuruoka City. (We can provide detailed directions for those interested.) We recommend Mt. Haguro for the first time pilgrim, though you also won't want to miss Churenji Temple*, a highly Michelin Guide rated destination and one of the few places in the world you can meet a "sokushinbutsu," a self-mummified monk who is regarded as a living Buddha, who's presence is fascinatingly contrasted by a ceiling covered in contemporary art.	---	Shonai hotel
