In Japan, there is a certain space called “Zashiki”. Originally the word describes the guest room with tatami mats, but nowadays it is often used for guest seating space in Izakaya(Japanese bar) with tatami mats or wooden floor.

Izakaya (Japanese bar) usually has table seats but using “Zashiki” seat provides more authentic experience. The “Zashiki” is little bit higher that the table seat and it is considered as the important manner to take off shoes before going in as it is normally done in the Japanese house. In “Zashiki”, there are thin mattresses called “Zabuton” for each individual to sit on.

“Zashiki” is often used for the group parties. One can take off shoes, surround the big table, and sometimes stretch the legs to enjoy drinking and conversation in the relaxed atmosphere.
