Toji Temple is regarded as a landmark of Kyoto. The five story pagoda (55 meters / 180 feet high) is the highest wooden construct in Japan. Toji is designated as a World Heritage Site.
At the base of Kyoto’s Inari mountain lies one of the most famous of all shrines in Japan, Fushimi Inari-taisha. While orange torii gates are a staple of all holy Shinto sites, Fushimi Inari is home to thousands of them.
Tofuku-ji is a Buddhist temple in Higashiyama-ku in Kyoto. Tofuku-ji takes its name from two temples in Nara, Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji. It is one of the so-called Kyoto Gozan or "five great Zen temples of Kyoto". Its honorary sango prefix is Enichi-san.
Gion is a famous Geisha district and a must see place if you want to get a glimpse of a traditional Japanese dance, the Maiko dance. Maikos and Geikos can be seen wandering around Gion giving the vibe of being transported to the past. Just remember to act respectfully if you do see them.
Kiyomizu Temple, or Kiyomizudera, means "Pure Water Temple." It is one of the most famous and popular temples in Kyoto and all of Japan. Founded in 780, it was built on the site of a waterfall and derives its name from there. It is best known for its wooden stage platform adjacent to the main hall.
When in Kyoto, you should try to visit Arashiyama if you love sight-seeing. There are many things to do in Arashiyama, but just exploring the district in general is a great way to discover Kyoto. Some popular destinations within Arashiyama are the Bamboo Grove, the many temples like Tenryu-ji, and the monkey park.
This spot is a must visit for those who love traditional Japanese seafood and other street foods. This large street market offers all kinds of unique Kyoto dishes to try and ingredients that you can purchase to try making your own Japanese dish. Keep an eye out for samples offered or you may just miss out on something that might end up a favorite.
Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is possibly one of the most well-known temples in Kyoto and for good reason. This zen temple is built right by a large pond and its top two floors are covered in gold leaf, creating a picturesque scene.
